Ricky Gervais’ Insult-Riddled Golden Globe Gig
Last year he was a huge hit as host of the Golden Globe Awards, but Ricky Gervais may have gone too far this time around.
The outspoken British actor/comedian laid into everyone at the event, including big names like Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, and Bruce Willis.
As part of his opening monologue, Ricky declared, “It’s going to be a night of heavy drinking… or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast… He picked up a porn star, paid her to have dinner with him, introduced her to his ex wife – as you do – went to a hotel, got drunk, got naked, trashed the place while she was locked in a cupboard … and that was a Monday! What did he do New Year’s Eve?”
Gervais continued his jabs, “I haven’t even seen ‘The Tourist.’ Who has? There’s this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason ‘The Tourist’ was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Deppand Angelina Jolie. That’s rubbish. They also accepted bribes.”
Ricky also introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad” as he came out to present an award early on.
When Robert Downey Jr came onstage, he shot back at Gervais, “Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the show’s going pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?”
Interestingly enough, Ricky became less and less involved with the show as the night wore on, with the television announcer doing most of the introductions. And when he finally returned to the stage, Gervais was subdued and stuck to the script. Perhaps he received a backstage reprimand?
